My FIL, in the Bay Area, has 2-300 BF of oak and cherry he wants to give me. It is in boards up to 8 ft long. The big question is how to get it up to me in Portland. At 8 ft it is too long for a pallet. One option would be to have him cut the boards to 4 ft and have it all sent on a pallet (I have a pickup on this end). Has anyone shipped wood recently? I suppose as a worst case the longer boards could be bundled and sent UPS.
Ideers?
TIA
Bob

We ship boards all the time using a common freight carrier. Just shipped three planks of antique character oak at 200 lbs. the other day. UPS charges extra for over six feet and over 75 lbs, max 150 lbs. Pallets are not needed for common freight but we have used double pallets and it's alright if it's longer than a pallet. We band the boards with a common shipping strapper and strap on some bunks to get a lift under the load. We also ship and get timbers up to 30 feet long or so by common carrier. Sometimes it's as simple as slapping on a label. See trucking in your yellow pages.
