I have been looking at the miter shooting device in the new FWW. How does on use it on 45d ? It looks as though the plane runs accross the jaw blocks. I like the idea but I do not see how to use it. I would seem that the jaw blocks would be planed away in short order.

Bonka,
Double check the paragraph on page 85 about using the miter shoot. The author indicates that planing the surface of the miter shoot is a concern. He recommends that you stop planing just before you get to that point.

A "plain ol" bench hook miter shooting board does the same thing without any damage to the shooting board. Easier to make, and the plane iron is always planing perpendicular to the work since the plane is on it's side during cutting.
I like shooting boards with a tapered base so you obtain a skewed cut and use the full width of the plane iron.
Don,
Could you elabprate or better yet, some pics?

Compliments of douglas2cats <!----><!----> on the New To Woodworking - I would like to make a shooting board thread:
Here's a collection of links to shooting board stuff I've bookmarked over time. I think only a couple have actual plans but there is good info on all I think.

But no where do they explain how to taper the base board!

Dont know if I've ever been quoted before. One that I forgot about though was something I came up with for doing bevels on the long edges. This was a first stab but actually works pretty well. I'm still pondering something a bit more adjustable rather than a fixed bevel angle though. If you run across something along those lines let me know.

D2C,
Hey, thanks for all the links! On my previous post on how to taper the base, after thinking about it, all one would have to do is place a block of wood under one end and run it through the planner..duh.

I forget that SMC implemented a policy of pics not being visible unless you're a member there.
If you build it he will come.
