The new link shows another picture of the Shooting for Perfection that answers my dumb question in: http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/messages?msg=43724.1
The additional pictures show that the base is indeed slanting downward. When I saw the picture (link above) my eyes saw a flat base and ramp going up. My eyes played a trick on me.
