I have been trying my hand lately at caricature carving, and have a LONG way to go before I am half-way proficient at it. I also intend to try my hand at making a couple of carving knives with both curved and straight blades, and need to locate some high carbon steel for the blades. I intend to shape and grind, the steel into proper shape blades, epoxy them into a scrap of hardwood handle, then sharpen and hone the blades.
I would like to use some scraps of steel from dull or discarded blades from my shop, but can’t think of a tool that uses blades of the proper thickness (about .065 to .075″ should be about right. ( I measured a discarded saber saw blade, it was about the right width, but slightly too thin.)
Any ideas out there? Thanks, Gary

Try one half of a pair of inexpensive wire strippers. The kind I have in mind are only about five to six inches long and do nothing but cut and strip electrical wire. An industrial power hacksaw blade works well, if you can cut or break it into small enough pieces. Protect your eyes!

JW,
Thanks for the suggestion of using wire strippers; I have an old pair in my shop drawer that seem to be the right thickness. I never would have thought of using them if you hadn't suggested it, so will sure give them a try. Thanks much. Gary
