"Woodworkers Essentail Facts, Formulas & Short-Cuts" by Ken Horner
Great book, lots of help
Just agreeing and adding that volume 2 is also excellent. My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
The Feynman Lectures on Physics volumes I, II, and III.

Ouch. I actually shot beer out of my nose when I read this. I thought you were just hardcore about your planes! :)
Clantzy.....Surely you're joking......(sorry, couldn't resist!!)I (try to) make my kids read his stuff just so they can know the delight of lateral thinking.Never in a million years did I imagine that Feyneman's name would pop up here And I'm laughin out loud thinkin that there;s at least one other fella out there that has a slide rule in his truck...Yo po buggah!!! Love it! Keep the faith!Fenyeman in a WWing forum. I can hear the drums now, .....And if anyone else ain't familiar with his name, scope out his books/bio at yer library. Fun light chapterized reading that is gauranteed to make an impact. Eric in Calgary
Actually, I think 'Surely You're Joking , Mr. Feynmann' would only be of use if you want to crack a safe ...
Oh!If that's all you got out of his books, well at least you got something.Eric
I got lots out of his books, but that was a particularly memorable sub-plot. He gained a reputation as a safe cracker by observing that most people didn't change their combinations and other things, but he really wanted to know how it was done.
I also learnt how to pick a lock - a skill I haven't had to exploit, yet.
Seriously, it was great to read books by a Nobel laureate, arguably one of the top minds of the 20th century, and almost read nothing about his genius, etc., but rather read about an otherwise normal adult male.
This is a guy who, in passing, developed a symbolic math (Feynman diagrams) which he explained to a half dozen or so nobel prize winners and it took them five years to understand what he said!
Workshop Math by Robert Scharff. (Popular Science) Not a bad book at all. Many tables, charts. Topics ranging from stress loads, stair layout, concreat forming, wiring, pully sizing, threading/tapping, insulating R-values, piping, heating, AC,using machinest tools, rough framing, framing square use.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Take a look at Machinist's Friend.com it's the best

thanks! i now have several places to look for information ...but im thinking that The Feynman Lectures on Physics volumes I, II, and III may have to wait till for my easy chair and fireplace this winter...least volumes 2 and 3.

Construction Geometry by Brian Walmsley
Shop math is the stuff you were covinced you'd never in your life use when you were in high school.
Darrin
In High School I was convinced that included everything besides lunch. The older I get the more I realize it is just the opposite. Funny how that works. The time in you life you think you knew it all becomes the time you couldn't have done more dumb stuff. It is truly a shame education is often wasted on those too immature to understand and appreciate it.Andy"It seemed like a good idea at the time"
It is to bad that the schools don't teach why it is important to know math and the other subjects are important to a person. Instead of way they do in most of the schools do, here kids learn this because if you don't you will fail.
