Hi
I am new to the world of woodworking and trying to set up my first shop. I am trying to decide on the table saw and caught between the hybrid jet supersaw and the dewalt verses the Shopfox 1677 which is aboout the same price. I have seen many reviews on the hybrids but none on the shopfox. Any opinions on its quality would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Personally I prefer "real" cabinet saws the the Hybrid saws, mostly for their better dust collection facilities. So even though I've only messed with the Shop Fox saw at a local shop and haven't been able to actually use one I'd still probably recommend it over a hybrid if you can find them at the same price point. I've heard the Grizzly 1023 line of saws recommended alot as well due to their low price point for a cabinet saw.
I've got the 1677, overall its a good buy for the money. It has a 2 year warranty, the support from Shop Fox & my dealer have been pretty good. I had a couple of problems which were compounded by the CF bankruptcy, but the dealer jumped through some hoops to correct the issues I was having. I haven't been able to slow down the saw with whatever I put through it. It will cut 3" white oak and maple as easily as 3/4" stock. Seems to have a little more vibration than the Unisaw, a little louder, but more powerful.
The first entry in Scotty's list bears emphasis:"much beefier trunnions that will stay aligned better"
The alignment on a cabinet saw is accomplished by slightly adjusting the table rather than loosening the trunnions and using a 2x4/hammer approach (contractor saws and hybrids). Major difference in my book! I've been through one nightmare with a trunnion assembly that got seriously out of whack. It was not fun.forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
IMO the SF by a mile, the hybrids are fairly poor values relative to several other saws -
Here's the pros:
- much beefier trunnions that will stay aligned better
- nearly double the HP
- better belt drive mechanism
- considerably better fence
- much more mass (= lower vibration)
- will handle any cutting task you ask (not just most)
- cab saws tend to hold resale value extremely well
Here's the con:
- requires 220v for operation (220 is a good idea regardless)
Gary,
I don't know what the price range the saws your looking at are but after spending 3 months research on 10" table saws I went with the Jet JTAS10 with the side table,Jessem router lift and 1617 Bosh router for $1699. I bought it from Southern tool shipping was included. I have a 10" Craftsmen contractors saw that I've used for the past 6 yrs I was ok with it but like everyone else I wanted to upgrade. What a difference I love it and I am very satisfied with the choice. The only thing I had to do to the new saw was shim the curser lower to the tape.

Did a poster say that Shopfox filed bankruptcy?
If this is true, there is no way I would buy a product from them. They won't be around in five years, let alone 50.
If you are popping that kind of money for the heart and soul of your shop, consider buying a brand that has been around for a couple decades, and probably will be around for some more. Powermatic and Delta are two examples. I owned a pre-war Delta Unisaw that was as beautiful to look at as it was to work with.
Oh, by pre-war, I don't be Gulf War I or Gulf War II for you youngsters. This is WWII, the big one.

Grizzly used to ship with Consolidated Freight (CF) & it went bankrupt here in the US.
Shop Fox is still very much in business. As is Grizzly which is owned by the same people. Purchase the Grizzly G1023SL it is the same saw accept for the hand wheels & the miter gage & paint & cost less. I went to the web site for both businesses & checked out the down loadable owners manuals.
As for finding older iron you need to be in a place where items like this are available. In some areas you could wait all your life & never find one for sale.Sucking.......Whoosh.......Yowl........Whoosh.........Thrump.
