I bought a Shopsmith Mark V in 1980. I’ve known for the last couple of years the bearings need replacing. The Shopsmith catalog lists an upgraded quill with 2 bearings (the original quill in mine apparently only has one).
My question: how much trouble is it to replace my quill with a new, 2 bearing quill. And, while I have the headstock apart, should I replace any other parts at the same time? And, for those who have upgraded to a 2 bearing quill, could you tell much difference after the change? Thanks much. GP

I upgraded to the 2 bearing quill a number of years ago. As I recall, the directions were pretty good. Have the new quill nearby so you can slide it in right after pulling the old one out.
I saw some improvement with the new quill, but have never been impressed with the accuracy of my 500. I recently upgraded to a PM66 table saw, so my SS sits in the corner offering its services as a drill press.

Fine Woodworking had two letters to the editor in regard to this back in 1982. I've attached two [huge!] scans of them.
