ShopSmith modification question
Before I get too deep into one of my crazy projects, I’d like to pose the following question : Has anyone modified a ShopSmith bandsaw to work as a stand-alone (bench-top) unit? Can I put a pulley on the ‘driven’ shaft and run to a standard 1/3 HP motor? I know that ShopSmith sells a rather expensive kit, stand, motor, and all sorts of other parts, but I don’t want or need that stuff. I’ve used a couple of the $100 special 9″ bandsaws and find them useless when cutting with a 3/16 or 1/4″ wide blade. Its use will be mostly for making parts for small toys at a ‘traveling’ demo. My 14″ saw is just too big and heavy to take out in the field. ‘Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks…. SawdustSteve Long Island, NY (E of NYC)

Saw doesn't care
Actually that saw could care less what drives her (source that is). 1/3 hp may be whimpy, I would go with 3/4 or better.
You could set the saw up like the old hinged motor weight wood lathes. May need to spring assist tension though.
