I use a short fence for ripping. I want to use board buddies for a project but am unsure whether I can use them with the short fence method. I think the recommendation is to have one buddy on each side of the blade – in feed and out feed. Could I put the second buddy where my fence ends – mid blade?
Thanks.

If you use a short fence, the need for Board Buddies for protection against kickback is significantly lessened. What is the primary reason you want to use the BB's??

I feel safer and they help guide the cut.
I've never used Board Buddies, hopefully someone will come along to help with the specific problem. My understanding of them is that they help keep the stock against the fence, and keep it from moving backwards (kickback). If you use a featherboard in conjunction with your short fence you'd be in pretty good shape safety-wise.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Have em, and use them for sheet goods.
You won't need them after the blade (which I assume is after your short fence ends).
Just use one on the infeed side with a feather board to assist as the 2nd contact point).
works for me :)

Thanks Michalael. Why don't you think they're necessary after the blade? The instructions indicate this is the preferred set up. I could move my fence forward and use one after the blade too. But that would defeat the purpose of the short rip fence.
It's preferred for the full fence set-up as the purpose to to keep the board that has been cut from interferring w/ the back of the blade by being pinched. However, in a short fence set-up, chances of pinching at the backside of the blade are far reduced.
Given that you would have to be very creative to even mount the board buddy after the short fence... I would simply opt to not use it.
Cheers,
Michael
Does your short fence attach to the regular fence? If so, mount the further board buddy on the main fence. This will work because the bb are not angled towards the fence as some other systems. The wheel itself is angled, keeps the stock down and towards the fence, but doesn't pull towards the fence.
If you are using ONLY a short fence, use one bb on the in feed side of the blade.

Thanks Mike. I guess I should clarify. My fence is mounted so that I can slide it forward and backward to any position I'd like. So I could also set it up with the fence extending past the blade and use both board buddies, which is what I've done in the past before I started positioning the fence to function as a short rip fence.
