Just a note to anyone looking to purchase a hand plane, if you are trying to decide who to purchase from I want to tell you that I recently had a small problem on a lie-nielson low angle jack plane, the front knob was a little loose so I e-mailed Lie-nielson to ask if I can re-glue the knob in place? The next thing I know is I get a package from Lie-Nielson in the mail with a whole new front knob assembly. I realy thought it was a mistake but it seems that this is the kind of service and customer service you can expect from Lie-nielson. I dont know of any other company that treats thier customers like this. It’s nice to know that you don’t have to worry about your hand tools.Ever. And just for reference that jack plane was a few years old. When I got my first Lie-nielson plane it was like a revalation. The quality is far superior to any thing else on the market. And now I know their customer service is the same.

Lie Neisen is just up the road a piece from me. Made in Maine, USA. They have the same attitude towards customer service as L.L. Bean and many other Maine businesses. If you don't like it, return it, no questions asked. Every woodworker should get a chance to visit their shop. It's in an old farmhouse and it's simply a shop with workbenches, scrap wood and their tools. No shelves with product, no neon lights, advertising. You go in, try out what you want and then tell them if you want something. They go out back and bring you out the item you want. Good chance it will be the owner, Tom. Lets see anyone try that at any other tool company.
Please don't buy Lie-Nielsen!
I like the way the current owner of the company runs things. ;-)
Hubie,
Two companies have equal customer service. They would be Lie Nielsen and Lee Valley. Both are phenomenal.
The difference between their planes is style. Chris Schwartz once said that Lee Valley is more like Jazz, whereas Lie Nielsen is more like Classical music. He was making the point that neither company's planes are better than the other, just different in style and feel.
