No I have done many pieces in tung oil and have never had a problem just make sure you do at least 3 coats. Cheers
It depends on what you're finishing. If it's a dining table I would want something more durable applied over the tung oil because pure tung oil alone needs periodic maintenance.
Here is a copy/paste from This Old House:
Pure tung oil is easy to identify because it contains no solvents. That may be a good thing in terms of limiting your exposure to VOCs, but applying it is an exacting, drawn-out process.
You have to wait at least two to three days for each coat to harden. And it takes five to seven coats to get a protective film. Rushing the process, or applying too thick a coat, causes wrinkling, which has to be sanded off.
Regular reapplication is a must—“once a week for a month, once a month for a year, once a year ever after,” as the saying goes. The results can be gorgeous, as long as you have the necessary patience.
I have a trestle dining table that I built years ago with tung oil on it and have never put a additional coat of tung oil on it,and I might add I use it every day.
I've added shellac over mine. I like the way it looks. The walnut in this photo had two coats of tung oil with a week between application and then a week after the last tung oil before I applied shellac.
