“Side Table from a Single Board” Dimension Question
In the plans p.4, the mortise for the apron is shown 3/16″ from finished outside face of leg. P.5 shows space between tenon cheek and outside face of apron as 1/8″. So it seems reveal would be 1/16″, which seems awfully small. P.3 has a note saying “Aprons and Stretchers set in 1/8” from outside face of legs. Advice from anyone who has made this project on how they addressed this would be helpful. Maybe just tweak the mortises back a bit? This is a great project for my current skill level and the videos are very helpful. Thanks.

Just finished this a couple of weeks ago. I can't recall the dimensions precisely, but I did end up with about a 1/16" reveal. I think it looks fine, but it wouldn't hurt for it to be a bit deeper. Watch your back side measurements tho.
Mine went well... well almost well. Had a problem with mounting the drawer slides. Short story, I had to abandon the drawer. I just might take another shot at this later this year.
Fun project.
Thanks for the response.
Wait! I found the answer in a later video. Mike planes 1/16" off the outside face of the aprons. So with the 16th that's already there, we get our 1/8. I should have known it was an accurate design. (Of course, a note on the plan would have saved me this question.) Thanks again for a great project.
In general, there are only rarely errors in FWW plans. They obviously work them through carefully.
The only thing I have trouble with is whether the tenons are included in parts lengths.
I made the one-board table twice. It was my first table with a drawer and was a real lesson. And how one gets parts out of a board, with the grain working right, was quite educational.
Hi StevieRay,
One of the lessons I learned from this project is to be careful of the cut list. Lengths do include the tenons. For the 2 stretchers, since the tenons are shorter, the overall length in the cut list is shorter. But keeping them the same length as the aprons allows for cutting the tenons and establishing the cheeks at the same time, and with the same set-up, as the aprons, ensuring exactly the same dimension. As Mike points out in a video, the tenons for the stretchers can be trimmed down after they have been cut and fitted.
Ooops. Darn, must’ve missed the “one more pass over the jointer” to fix the reveal. I do remember seeing that in the video though. There you go 3230. I’ve got enough material left over… maybe I’ll give it one more shot.
BTW,have you done the rail over the top of the drawer yet? I didn’t watch the video close enough. Mike changes the pair of half blind dovetails on each end to a single one in the video. I thought at the time I was cutting them that surely a single on each end would be adequate. So, I followed the prints. Probably learned more, but wished I’d followed the video on that component. Best of luck.
Good catch! I agree one seems perfectly adequate, and I'll go that way. By the way, I think the plans handle the reveal issue by offsetting the tenons. I think Mike's video process of centering the tenons and then trimming the additional 1/16 off the face is a lot easier, and that's the way I've done it. Mortises and tenons all cut now; starting to do some fine tuning of the fit.
