As someone who has no carving talent and no time to develop such talent, I’ve toyed with the idea of buying a sign making jig that works with a plunge router so I can put a personal touch on some projects. Anybody had any experience with these jigs? Do they work as advertised?

I purchased a Craftsman sing makers jig on ebay. I have yet to put it to use, but plan to in making a few Christmas presents. I will try to let you know how it is going.
The sign making kit from Sears is a reboxed version of the Milescraft Sign-Pro. It is pretty simple to use, but you are limited to one block letter font that comes in two sizes (1 1/2"- 2 1/2"). I would only recommend using the corebox/roundnose bits because the bushings are slightly smaller than the template letters. So if you use a V grooving bit you end up with a slight offset ( like W) but the middle point will not be that big. The Milescraft base will fit most plunge router bases.

I've used the Milescraft sign maker. It works well. But be careful with too much force on the rails when routing, the templates can wiggle. Just be sure all is tight and do not expect this to be a production tool. works great and you will be pleased.
