I have been commissioned to make a silverware chest –is it necessary to use special lining material and is one kind better than others? any special seal for the cover ? I build humidors with a satisfactory seal is that good enough ?

vern,
A product called "Pacific silver cloth" is the standard to use for preventing tarnishing of silver. I usually line the drawer or compartment with the cloth, and attach a flap at the back, that lays on top of the contents. My understanding is that the cloth is impregnated with something that bonds with the oxygen in the air, preventing it from reacting with the silver. Your client may already have bags made of silvercloth to protect the silver-if so, lining the compartment would be redundant.
I would not count on a tight lid to prevent tarnishing.

thanks Ray --is there a special source-- I have checked with my usual ones with no results thanksmaking sawdust
I typed Pacific Silver Cloth into google and found a ton of places selling it. Redundant to post it here.My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
vern,
I got my Pacific cloth from a local jewelry store.
