…a popular topic as of late…
After reading Tooldoc’s post in GD about the HD sale, I decided to go check it out. Recently, my DeWalt 12v drill gave up the ghost. It was a hand-me-down from my dad about 2 yrs ago, and I think he used the thing for about 3 or 4 yrs, so I’d say it did fairly well. So anyway, I’m at HD looking to replace it with another DeWalt. I see their 18v for a hundred bucks, and I’m about to grab one, when I see the same deal on the Milwaukee 14.4v hammer drill. I put them side by side, and IMHO, there was no comparison. The Milwaukee looked to be a much more rugged tool. Yes, the Milwaukee’s only a 14.4v, but the 12v did everything I asked it to do, so I don’t see the need for 18v.
Granted, I probably won’t use the hammer feature much, if ever (outside of the stuff I build in my shop, I only do finish carpentry), but it’s there if I need it.
Anyway, does anyone have experience with this particular tool? I have a Sawzall and their 1 3/4 hp “grip” router, both of which are outstanding tools, but this is my first cordless…

Richard

I have owned that Milwaukee Cordless Drill for years, and it is one of the best tools I have. The hardest test I ever put it to was drilling about 50 2" in diameter auger holes in hard dirt around a huge oak tree for fertilizer. My suggestion is "buy it!"

Timing is everything. Milwaukees are great cordless drills. Until recently, the chargers were lousy. Just about everyone I know got maybe a year out of the charger before it went kaput. But they redid that, and with the new line of stuff in the stores the new chargers are with them. Now I've got two Mil drills, and one charger that works for all 4 batteries. But I've only had that a few months. Guess we'll see next summer.

OK cool, thanx guys.
I picked it up. Almost didn't get it, though. I tracked down an HD employee, he looked up to where they were stocked, and told me that they were sold out. I asked him to grab a ladder and just double check, which he didn't seem to want to do, and there were two left...pushed back a little bit from the edge. Wonder how many people were gonna buy one but were told they were out...
Anyway, I charged up the batteries earlier today, but haven't used it yet. I'm sure I'll find an excuse in the next couple of days. :)

Richard
