John: I thought I remembered single phase speed controls.

Some of these solutions might be too expensive or complex for their application on small woodworking machines. Nice to know it is there if needed.

Went through the literature from Anacon and it appears that their controllers only work with certain types of induction motors, and not those typically found on woodworking machines. The other companies drives are primarily for stepper and servo motors not larger drive motors. It would be nice to find a good speed control for the single phase motors on most machines. I've filed away the information you've sent me I'm sure I'll use it at some point.
Thanks, John White
John: I think a call to one of the companies tech support lines would clear it all up once and for all. I didn't go through all that was on their web sites but only PSC and SP motors were mentioned. I think a single phase motor with a starting switch would work fine as long as the controller was set to a minimum speed above the cutout speed of the switch. Some or all such controllers have a "starting boost" to get it going then backing off to the desired speed.
