My brothers and I are installing a new fire rated door in my parents house in a few weeks. The new door (steel) does not fit well into the decor of the room – its going between a garage and an office type room. The office has a lot of oak cabinets. We would like to laminate some oak veneer to the inside of the door and then stain it to match (or at least get close) to the same colors as the rest of the room.
Given that we all live 2+hrs from my folks house,we will be picking up the door locally on the day on install.
The questions I am struggling with are:
What type of veneer? I see paper backed is cheap, but can have adhesion problems (no vacuum bags available)
I have heard of three layer veneer (some say its a very thin ply wood as it is cross banded). It is not supposed to have the bubbling problems that paper backed may. Its seems a little pricer, but contact cement would be a simple method for installation.
PSA backed. Well, I hear that peel and stick might work (I guess 3M has a super strength glue that they put on the stuff), but it needs a couple of days to cure after placement prior to finishing.
Our goal is to get this and a bunch of other house maintenance done over a three day weekend. Waiting two days until starting to finish will drag out too long.
So any suggestions on procedure or supplies?
Thanks

Check out door skin material and contact cement it. Hide the edge with dark color stain.
Wallpaper dealers carry a great paste made for adhesion to steel also there is available a veneer wall covering available too. (walnut mahog etc etc.
I have forgotten the trade name for the stuff, but since it is real wood the whole process of applying takes minutes.
Staining or sealing a bit more.
Ask about at commercial paper hanger suppliers. Or google up the product. Stein.

Larry,
Make a vacume bag out of a plastic bag for a matress, and that red construction tape for sealing house wrap. How long does it have to have suction? It won't be good for your vaccume, so use one you don't like.
Cheers
