Sizing stock with terrible grain! I just did that with my oscillating sander and a clamped on fence.
My planner just ruined the wood.. All kinds of tear-out.. With nice sharp blades! YES I had the sticks running in the right direction.. You ask how do I know? I’d say I tried BOTH ways!
Wood a bit thinner than planned but saved by day!
I can’t afford or have room for another power tool.. Worked great.. Just be sure to feed the wood the opposite of the sanding tube direction.. Like a router.. If not, make a great rocket launcher…
Only works for not to wide sticks though.

Was this stock eye-popping gorgeous, or are you a glutton for punishment?
Cures in order of ease/cost (BTW I'm stuck at #3 for lack of funding)
1. Fill spray gun with H2O and apply liberally before each pass.
2. Take very light cuts. (Swinging cat overhead 3 times is optional)
3. Build jig with bridge and use the biggest mortising bit in your router.
4. Fit planer with spiral HSS insert tooling head
5. Fit planer with helical carbide insert tooling head
6. Buy a Performax
7. Buy a widebelt sander

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.
