Finally going to try this. I had an old dvd of this that for some reason will not download to my PC. So I went online and I see there is a Sketch-up free version, is it a secure download and is it the right one to try since I am starting out with this?? Thanks for your help.

So far as I know it is just as safe as anything else on the web. Just go to https://www.sketchup.com and look for the free version. You can use the software on line for free and have 10gb of free storage for your work. Any extras beyond that will cost $$.
I would argue that although Sketchup has been popular for a long time, and has always been my go-to for design, Fusion360 is probably a better piece of software, and it is certainly much more feature-rich at the free end. I've been learning to use it and it's not any harder - just different.
Unlike Sketchup you get pretty much everything in the free version - you only have to pay for things you won't need as an amateur. It's also quite friendly for CNC work if that becomes part of the future.
Solid Works is also gaining traction, especially amongst those who 3D Print, but I've not used that one. A relative uses it to design robots and it's great for moving parts.

Dave - You've inadvertently linked to your entire cloud picture directory. Love the pictures of you sailing around the bay, hate your Martin House (Martins preferentially eat dragon flies, which eat mosquito larvae. Attracting Martins to you property actually increases the mosquito levels in your area).

"For what it is worth - Dave Richards who did Post #3 has a business relationship with Sketchup. He sells training seminars."
No! I do not have a business relationship with SketchUp. I've done a SketchUp course for Fine Woodworking which they sell but I do not sell training seminars for SketchUp/Trimble and I do not sell training seminars myself. I'm not selling anything in this thread, either.
I wonder where you came up with that false information.
Sorry Dave - My mistake - I will delete that post
I assume you do get paid for doing the Sketchup Training

Please accept my sincere apology. It was my assumption you benefitted financially from teaching Sketchup.

Hey folks. Let's try and keep it limited to the OP's actual question. They didn't ask for other software to use, they asked for help finding the free version of SketchUp.
