I am creating a sketch up model for a table. The table top has curves (but not a true oval). I am trying to create a cove molding on the bottom edge of the table top and thought that the “Follow Me” tool would be the best way. However, I keep getting a message that I “cannot extrude on a curved surface”. I’ve tried a ton of you tube videos but can’t seem to nail it down.
Looking for the groups help.
I use the free web version of Sketch Up.
Thanks
Mark

Search Design Click Build on fineWoodworking look for posts by David Richards. You may have to search a little but there are posts that show you how to do it.
There are also plungins that help with that to good luck
Sketchup itself has a basic video tutorial on Follow Me...did you go through that one? The process can be buggy sometimes depending on what what your model application is, generally it's pretty straight forward
Not the easiest question to answer here but I will try to show what I do, I'm no power user and do use Sketchup Pro.
First draw the outline of the surface you want then use the offset tool to draw a parallel line offset an amount equal to the thickness of your top. Here I assumed a 1" thick top with a ¾" radius. (photo 1)
Next I drew a 1" x 1" square in the vertical plane. I did this away from my drawing for clarity. On this vertical surface I drew my desired radius(¾") then deleted the 2 unnecessary lines leaving only my desired profile. Then after selecting all the edges and surface, I used the move tool to place it on the inner line of my surface. (photos 2-4)
Then I selected all the segments of the inner line (photo 5) followed by choosing the Follow Me Tool and clicking on the profile I had previously placed. And magically your desired profile should appear all along your surface. (photo 6)
Maxed out on attachments.
After this it's just routine work with the Pushpull Tool and erasing unneeded lines.
Mark, it would be helpful if you could share your SketchUp model file. From the free web version you can click on the "pancake menu" (three horizontal lines) in the far top left corner of the SketchUp window and choose Download. If you prefer not to share the file publicly, you could share it with me privately. Go to the Design. Click. Build. blog, scroll to the bottom of one of my posts and click on my name to e-mail the file to me directly.
Hi Dave, thanks for you reply. I'm attaching the file I'm using; although I'm not sure this will go through because skp files do not show up on the allowed file types
Looks like it didn't work. If you put it in a zip file you should be able to share it here, though.
Hi Dave, here's a Zip file.
In the meantime I found a way around my problem by tweaking esch5995's suggestion. I'll reply to all with that
Thanks to everyone for your replies. Tagging onto esch5995's suggestion I approached the problem by adding the edging as a separate item to the original table top and then removing the lines. I used the offset tool to resize the original top
