I am not clear on when you would use a SCENE tab in SketchUp. I am new to the tool, but most, if not all, of the demonstrations use only the main scene for teaching. When would you use something like this?

Scenes were called Pages in previous versions of Sketchup. They are used to show different aspects of a model in successive views.
You might use scenes, for example to show front, back, and side views of a house model. Or to show the development of a model from initial geometry to the application of textures.
Numbered scene tabs appear at the top of the Sketchup display as you add scenes from the Scenes Window. The tabs can also be given descriptive names

Excellent! Thanks for the response.
You can also use Scenes to display or not display different layers. For example if you wanted to show a client how their case piece would look with different style doors, you could create a set of each style placing them on their own layers. In one scene you might have the shaker style door layer turned on and the raised panel door layer turned off. In another scene you could reverse the layer visibility.
You could also create animations by creating arrays of moving components. Then move each instance of the componets to their own layer. By controlling which layers are turned on in each scene and make components appear to move. Here's a quick animation I did a while ago to illustrate this. http://www.brightcove.com/title.jsp?title=979158451
Another use for scenes is to make walk throughs. SketchUp will interpolate the views between scenes so you can move around or through a model that way.

Woah! That's awesome. I like the animation - very, very, cool. Thanks everyone for the responses. I went out last night and bought a book (I know the title is dumb - Google SketchUp for Dummies). The content is well written and I am understanding what the author is talking about. Also, he has some videos on YouTube that explain the concepts as well.Hopefully, I will become proficient with this tool and be well on my way towards creating some very nice woodworking projects.Thanks.
Thank you. It's not a very practical thing, that. But it was a good exercise to demonstrate some possibilities for combining layers and scenes.
