I have a kitchen banquette with benches on both sides of the bench. The bench tops hinge up for access to the under seat storage. I would like to make a new trestle table with a top that would slide sideways, both left and right to make storage easier to access. The table will be 44” x 70” and slide sideways across the 44” width of the table top. I would like to get 10”-12” left and right. Any ideas?

On trestle tables, I normally have a batten across the top, near each end, to keep the top flat, and to attach it to the legs of the trestle. You could have the batten attached to the top, with a groove in the inside, and a "sub-batten" attached to the trestle, with a groove and spline that fits in the groove of the batten. If you aim for 10" movement each direction, you would have about 24" of spline to keep the top from being tippy. You would need to arrange for stops. A pin that went thru holes in both batten and sub-batten when the top was centered would keep it from sliding back and forth in use. When you screw the battens to the top, that would capture the sub-battens between them, guaranteeing no escape.
