All,
Last night I was marking up some small dovetails in 3/8″ thick stock, 1 3/4″ wide with my tradional style sliding bevel….what a pain…too much tool for the size stock…very difficult to get the dovetails in the center of the stock marked correctly..too little room to insure sliding bevel is square to the stock. I did a workaround with a jig last night but decided to look around for a more permanent solution. The attached shows a few choices..it would seem the Starretts meets my needs but I’m curious how others deal with this issue, thanks

I got the little 4" Veritas sliding bevel and it is great. It is very handy for tight places and works like a charm.
sailalex,
I like the 4" size of the Veritas but think I need the screw in the middle of the handle...so I can get full support of the stock when marking.
BG,
I made my own dovetail square years ago. It's similar to the ones illustrated in your link, by Crown, except mine is all wood, and the blade extends thru the handle by a 1/2" on one side, and about 3" on the other. Handle is about 3" long.

Rau,
Out of desperation I made my own last night. Took a piece of 1/2"x7" square stock and ran it through the BS lengthwise about 4"....slid the blade of bevel through the 1/2" stock...thereby creating a sliding bevel with the blade in the middle.
I've got a Crown and ECE type...wondering if I can take those apart and reposition the holding screws to the middle of the handle...??. The Starretts seems to have it all, but at that price...
BG,
I don't see why you couldn't reconfigure the squares you have, although I haven't felt the need for other than the "set" square I made. You changing the flare of your dovetails frequently?

Ray
Ray,
"You changing the flare of your dovetails frequently?" Not really, I suspect the "set square" would work too. Of course, my shop is so small I need to be able to collapse my tools to fit....lol.
BG, no advice from me, LOL, but thanks for the link. That Dovetail Bevel (9th image; silver; different design) is sure clever. Wonder if there's anyone in the States that sells it.....forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG,
Don't know wo sells it here..and if you ned to pay for it with E dollars. However, It did remind me of a plumbers reamer tool...used to clean out the inside of copper pipe before soldering....
Not sure what you need. I use a dovetail marker I got at Woodcraft and it's fine for me.
John_D,
That might work but on narrow stock it might be tricky for me. Marking ####dovetail in the middle of 1 1/4" stock leaves about 3/4" for support under the jig..not so much. eh?
Can't say how you'd like it. I've cut DTs in 1/4" stuff with these guides and quite happy, but everyone likes different solutions. :)My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
