I have a client who wants an 8′ upstairs hallway turned into a closet. Back wall would be standard gypsum board but front wall would be a wall with three bookshelves. The middle bookshelf would sit in front of the two side ones and slide to the right (on something like a hidden barn door rail and wheels?) in place of using a door. These would be painted bookshelves and she doesn’t actually have many books, but I’m still concerned with how much this approx 3′ wide by 6 1/2′ high bookcase will weigh. The floor is carpeted and the clients are elderly so I want this to move fairly easily.
Here are the questions:
1. What mechanism to us to have this bookshelf easily slide right?
2. What should I make the bookshelves with? MDF, high grade plywood, pine?
Thanks for your advice,
Ron

I vaguely recall a discussion of this very subject, but it may have been on the Breaktime forum; an advanced search may help turn something up.
Good luck,

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Sounds like a spot for a nice nylon guide on the bottom and ball bearings on the top. For about $350 you could buy a 24" travel,115 volt ac linear actuator and make it open electrically!! Sorry; retired electrician looking for the electric side of everything. Link below for heavy duty slides and actuators, maybe overkill but thats my middle name.
