Sliding Dovetail Lid – anyone know how?
Hello everyone,
Recently I saw a picture on the web of a little box with a sliding dovetail lid. (please see attached) Would anyone be able to guide me on how to accomplish this technique? I am a beginning woodworker but I think some type of jig on a router may be the way to go. I would like to use this lid technique on building some jewelry boxes. Perhaps you know of a good book or article or even have an idea of your own that you would be willing to share. Any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Thanks for the info,

To do the box illustrated, router is probably the easiest way to getting it tight; but, if you lack tools try a combination of scraper and plane.
Make the box from several pieces and bring the top and inside faces of the sides to finish dimensions. you can use a scraper to cut the inside top edge of the sides to the appropriate profile, including stopping a bit short of the end which is more difficult on a router with such small pieces. All you need is a holder with a fence and a bit of hacksaw or circular saw blade ground to the appropriate angle. After you have assembled the box you can use a plane to fit the edges of the lid into the sides.
Scraper can be made from 2 'L' shaped pieces of ply clamping the blade between them in a position to use one arm as a fence and the other as a depth guage. Dont throw out the tool - it can also hold all sorts of profiles such as reeds and flutes just as well as the expensive bought ones.
Patto,
Thanks for your help,
Dan
