I have a Jet 16 inch planner with 3 Hp motor and a 3 belt drive. I have installed a spiral cutter head. The planner has always had some belt slippage which I took care of when the knife head was in the machine. Now with the higher resistance of the spiral cutter head there is a lot of belt slippage, you can hear it and and see lint from the belts. I have made sure the pulleys are in alignment and have applied belt dressing. The belts still slip quite a bit. Does anyone have a constructive idea about how to solve this issue?

If you have 3 belts they must be purchased as a matched set. They cannot be purchased as identical part numbers and be expected to work.
You will also need to tension them, it may be as simple as the motor mounting plate bolts in slots which you will need to pry tight when tightening or a more elaborate adjustment with screws. Not familiar with this machine so I would think it would be addressed in the manual
Belts can get burnished. Triple belt sleeves do want matched sets of belts. Link belts can be your friend. . . . Queue the link-belt-haters ;-)
Thanks for your reply but a bit on the cryptic side. Can you explain your reference to link belts and where does one find matched belts? I have had this planner for several years and would like to get it fixed up properly and not spend money on a new one. This Jet planner does have a reputation for eating belts but looking for a solution before moving on.
Just go to a supplier of drive belts and make sure to simply tell them you need a matched set for a gang pulley.
thanks
Someone with a PLANER that nice should know how to spell it correctly, don’t ya think?
Generally in the English language, a vowel followed by a single consonant is the long version.
Seriously, REJ?
@hotdogman, Sorry. Didn't mean to be cryptic. I am usually the guy asking for people to be more complete and not assume knowledge. Link belts are liked by many and disliked by some. I have to assume a bad experience that is an exception to the normal industrial use of these belts.
Gates, Acculink and Fenner Powertwist are some makers. Often very high priced at specialty shops like Woodcraft and Rockler. Normal price is around $6 to $7 per foot. Harbor Freight actually sell Acculink for a good price.
Very popular in dampening vibration in lighter weight machines they are also common in heavy industry where a belt that can be 'assembled' on to a machine versus disassembly of parts of that machine to swap a one-piece belt.
They come in many flavors, material and purposes. The basic 4L or 'A' replacement 1/2" belt material is generally available.

Great for multi-belt setups as the length is very accurate in increments of a full link. Quality "matched" regular belts will serve you well too.
I have replaced the single V belt on my 8 inches helicoidal jointer with a link belt and reduced the noise and vibration considerably while not experiencing any slippage.
Grammar Nazi..
John & all,
I apologize for gramar-Nazi post.
I was taking a break from the New York Times crossword, which wasn't going very well.
:-D
Thanks for the link belt info. I am going to measure things up and order some link belt from a supplier. I hope it solves the problem as it will save me big bucks. Appreciate your time.
Take a look at where the belts ride. V belts ride on their sides. If they bottom out one of the pulleys is worn out.
RobertEJr you need to make an appointment with your Proctologist who can help you find your head. Maybe you can work on the crossword puzzle during the search. You seem like a person who can have two things going on at the same time. Did I get all of the spelling correct?
