I’ve used drum sanders before, and there are certain times when having one would be really handy. However, I think 95% of the stuff I would use it for would only be 8″ wide or less, like laminated strips for a bent table apron, 1/8″ square inlays, etc. Plus, shop space is always an issue.
I just don’t need or want a big 16″ drum sander. I’ve looked, but I’ve never seen a 8″ or even 6″ wide drum sander. It would be a great help to me. Anyone seen or have one?

I haven't seen any commercially available drum sanders that small, but I have seen plans for a homemade one. They are in a book called "Luthiere Tools",
and I think it's published by the Guild of American Luthiers. You could check their website for availability.
That drum sander was made with a 6" long sleevless sanding drum attached to a motor, with an adjustable table below it. It wasn't very complicated, and it probably wouldn't take much to make one like it.
Hope this helps.

Look or call Klingspor,
They have a small Performax sander.
Also a kit, which might be modified smaller.

Here are some pics that Mike sent me back a while ago when I was looking at building a thickness sander. Mike posts here under PlaneWood but I don't think he has been around much do to some other matters.

Hello,
Penn State has come out with a smaller drum sander. It is not a precise thickness sander, just a drum sander. Take a look at their website.

Here's a link to the Klingspor kit Jeff in Vermont mentioned http://www.woodworkingshop.com/cgi-bin/E2767C80/mac/additmdtl.mac/showItemDetail?item=PS35000&qtyA=0&phsO=N&desc=18%22%20PORTABLE%20SANDING%20DRUM%20KIT%20*&drpshp=N&alOrd=Y&iQty=.000&oQty=.000&initQty=1&itemForSale=Y&styleName=&fixD=&face=.00&gftc=&stck=Y&prefS=UP4&calledFrom=DS&ordInfo1=&ordInfo2=&ordInfo3=&ordMan1=N&ordMan2=N&ordMan3=N&persCode=&persReqd=&persLink= Saw it demonstrated at a woodworking show and it seemed to work pretty well. Might be what your looking for.
