Small cabinet carcass and face frame with 1-1/2″ x 3/4″ pine how many dowel pegs
I am building a small cabinet carcass, and a face frame out of 1-1/2″ x 3/4″ pine; however, I am unsure on how many and what size of fluted dowels I should use. This will be a small cabinet that site on top of a desk, that will be about 12″ by 24″ with a few pull out draws that will hold maybe max 20-30 lbs of stationary equipment (pens, pencils, paper, etc).
Thank you

Where are the dowels going?
We need maybe a sketch, and definately a third measurement.
LxWxH would be best.
As was suggested, a sketch would be helpful. Since you referred to the face frame specifically, am I right in guessing you are referring to using dowels to join rails and stiles as in my quick sketch? If so, two should be plenty.
@DaveRichards
That is 100% spot on what I am doing. I will also join the sides - End to Service to make up the sides, and put 1/4" rabbit to put in 1/4" plywood for sides and top.
Would you say 1/4" dowel are good? About 1/4" from edge of board?
"I will also join the sides - End to Service to make up the sides..."
I assume you mean to "edge to surface" for the case? No need for dowels in the case parts. Glue will be adequate.
"...and put 1/4" rabbit to put in 1/4" plywood for sides and top."
Be careful not to get any hare in the joint. Sorry. Couldn't help it. :D
I'm guessing 3/4 in. for the sides, top and bottom. Is that right? Assuming it is, a 1/4-in.-deep rabbet in the case sides will be fine.

1/4 in. diameter dowels will be fine. I would center them in the thickness of the rails and stile and centers 3/8 in. in and 3/4 in. apart.
@DaveRichards,
I am glad you caught my sense of humor...++laugh++ now we just need Elmer Fudd... and Yosemite Sam!!!
In these times we need to keep ourselves working in shops, and in great spirits.
Thank you all for your help.

God bless!!!
1/4" is good.
Might I say "good excuse to buy a pocket screw jig"?
Dowels are such a nuisance and add very little strength. In the end, the face frame usually ends up glued and nailed or screwed to the carcase. I usually use pocket screws on the face frame, and then attach the frame to the box.
I also always use pocket screws to form my face frames, and typically use a few Dominos to align my faceframe and cab, then glue and clamp.
Pocket screws... I have looked at them, but still on the fence.
The only thing I use pocket screws on are face frames, where they will never be seen. But they are an excellent use for them. Fast, easy, cheap, and much more than strong enough.
