Hi all. I haven’t got the space for a big table saw and need to break down sheet materials. I’ve got a corded circular saw but the weight of it made me wonder whether there are small ones on the market. I’ve found on the internet the Porter Cable trim saw, but I live in the UK so the power wouldn’t work, and have also come across a cordless Makita which has a maximum cut at 90 degrees of just under 1″ which I’m thinking would be great for 3/4 sheet material.
Any help or recommendations gratefully received.
Thanks in advance
Roger

Another option, If you have the space, would be to buy or build a panel saw. There have been a number of plans in various magazines over the years.

Thanks for the reminder Rick, need to look through my mags.
Hello Roger,
I'm temporarily living here in Germany and I of course brought over many of my 110v power tools. The Porter Cable trim saw was one of them, I bought a $20.00 step down converter on e-bay and have utilized it for the past year. Yes it adds to the cost of the saw but the money was well spent. These converters seem to be readily available in the UK. The saw is small, light and does a great job in cutting down sheets of plywood.
Thanks woodguru. Now I'd better check I can get replacement blades - don't seem to be able to find any with a decent tooth count for the small makita.
Why don't you just make a simple shooting board for CS you already own?

Nikkiwood,
I've got the two piece veritas straight-edge which is great but a lot more expensive than a home made one. I was looking to see if there was a nice good cs which was small and lightweight which would make using it easier.

Roger,
I have used the PC trim saw for about 4 years now. Love it. But one drawback is that it uses a 6" blade. Most blades are too big. The best place I've found for blades is Amazon.com. I order several of the plywood and carbide toothed blades at a time. Free shipping for orders over $25 I think.
The thing I like most about the saw is the light weight. Why have to manhandle a heavy saw. I use it all the time. It will easily cut 2x4s or 1 1/2 MDF. It is good for ripping 4x8 sheets to size.
I think you will like it.
Have a look at PROTOOL which is a sister company of Festool they make a very nice small 6ins saw in a 240v version a guide rail system that might suit your needs.
