If marks are being left at the "ends" of the iron then your iron is not properly ground. Smoothing plane irons need to be very very slightly convex so that the edges do not "dig" or mar the surface you are planing.
Hi,
Make sure that your iron is properly set in the plane before cutting. Take a practice cut on some scrap and look to see that the shaving produced on the left side is the same thickness as the one on the right. Adjust as needed.
Also check to see that your plane iron edge is just slightly convex. You can do this with your honing to give it a bit of a curved edge. This way the corners won't dig in as you cut on a wide panel.
Last, don't take too big a bite when planing. And don't forget your scraper if you need to remove those marks. Have fun.
