Hi Guys~
I’ve looked through the discussion on smoothing curley maple… so, what about smoothing reclaimed old-growth VGF? Would the requisite LN 4-1/2 do a good job? I’m lookin’ for an excuse… heh. It seems to me this wood is prone to tear out as well, but I currently only have a #7 Standley without throat adjustment to compare to.
Thanks, and cya!

I just picked up a L-N #7 and #4 1/2. These are superb tools. I first tried their new LA planer but the lack of throat adjustment was a real disappointment.
If you have a lot of VG fir (and you certainly would be the lucky one) then I would invest in a #7 with adjustable frog. I would get the 4 1/2 after planing all of my stock flat and true. Fir is very easy to work, especially old growth seasoned wood.
