Has anyone made any of these or know of any references. The grids available for purchase that I have found, are too wide and too flat.

Try to find window manuf. label on windows and call them.
If you can't find manuf, measure glass size and call local window suppliers. Ask if they can order grids close in size that you could trim to fit.
I've made some using lap joints. I don't know how they were held in place.
Try asking question on Breaktime also.
