I’ve never bothered to do this, other than the occasional breadboard
end, and then only because it was part of the traditional look for the
piece being made. I kind of like the end grain exposed on table tops
as it is obvious then that the top is solid wood.
Any one care to speculate?

Nice work! I actually like the look of end grain, now that I am learning to use hand tools. Power saw cuts on end gain are ugly. It takes a lot of sanding to make them look acceptable. It's easier to disign around it. Another fact that you may have over looked is how end grain soaks up stain. Darker stains on end grain can look bad if the wood has not been prepaired.

Not if you use this blade. Leaves the surface uber-smooth and shiny like a mirror. Not that using a hand-plane isn't a good idea :-) but this Ultimate Cutoff blade will give as good a surface as most could dream of.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Well, it looks to me like the grain stops about 1/8" before the ends.
Oh yeah, good work too!

Thank you both for the compliments.Planewood- I think you're seeing the light reflecting on a small chamfer
that eases the edges of the tops, if we're talking about the same thing anyway.Will- Good point on the stain, I always seem to forget that, as I rarely
use stains.John
John,
I finished some chip carving on a coat rack the other day, just used an oil finish with a bit of wax. The darker takeup on the end grain really helps to 'make' the piece. (and it really needed the help)
I guess that I just like the contrast and dont often do anything to "correct" it

First of all I NEVER have made a period piece but for me.. WOOD IS WOOD.. I leave it as is and happy.. However, I have won a Blue ribbon!
EDIT:: Geeeeee I forgot to say nice table!
