Everyone,
For quite some time I’ve been trying to purchase some software that will allow me to create woodworking patterns similar to those Fine Woodworking uses. ANYONE with suggestions would be GREATLY appriciated.

Hi Mike,
There are several CAD software applications on the market that allow you to design furniture plans. Some are definitely more difficult to use than others.
We reviewed a few programs in 2004. I can guarantee that most of that software has at least been upgraded since then, so that review is somewhat out of date. We also didn't look at one program that has gained quite a bit of popularity in the last few months, called SketchUp. It's an easy 3D design software for Mac and PC.
Almost all of the drawings we publish in the magazine are hand drawn and then illustrated on the computer, so if you really want to make plans and patterns that look like ours start with some drafting supplies.
Best Regards,

Hello Matt,
I do have the drafting down pretty well. My problem is drawing different perspectives. I thought that rather go back and relearn that art that it might be fun and a shortcut to just get a reasonably priced software. My projects are for my own use and enjoyment so I don't need much.

In that case, SketchUp is a good place to start. Over in Knots one user has posted several video tutorials. Check those out and see if it's the kind of thing you're looking for.

Matt,
I'll do that. Thank you.
