I recently purchased my first Shellac flakes. I had been buying BullsEye 3# cut shellac and dewaxing and thinning it myself.
Well, no more! The super blonde dewaxed flakes are so much easier to deal with. I’m finding that about 1 cup of flakes per 1.5 pint aholchol is sufficient for sealing Rosewood. So, the expense is less. Cost less, and easier – can’t beat that!
I paid $13 a pound for the flakes.

Mike!
Good for you! Now you can see why the old masters loved this stuff. And how about that finish????? Shellac flakes has to be one of my fav finishes of all time.
*Mike, I'm glad to see my favorite finish in print. I kinda thought what with all of the new stuff out there I had to be some kinda ludite to like how simple and easy it is to work with. I like mixing it with the dust from finishing to help conceal gaps etc. I mix a thick paste of the stuff and using a spatula smearing it in holes/gaps/whatever. If I miss by a little I do a finish sanding and the miss disappears. Since I can spray just about any finish over the shellac, I treat it like a sanding sealer sometimes when I need a more durable finish than what shellac offers. I also like the warm rich color it imports to the wood!
*Mike,I just ordered my first # - I'm going to try it as a finish over boiled linseed oil, followed by gel varnish, on a desk of figured maple I just finished. I'm glad to see someone else took the plunge!Jim
