Hello,
I am planning to build a couple of solid wooden doors for our church and was wondering which wood is the best for an exterior door? An oily type wood such as tigerwood? Mahogany? I am looking at one of these options or possibly others. My experience has been that both of these woods are dimensionally stable. Also, any suggestions on a finish? These doors are on a southwestern exposure and see a lot of sun and are exposed to the elements. I am located in Northern Alabama so we have our fair share of humidity as well.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Stan

Clear finish or painted?

My first choice would be a clear finish so that the character of the wood can be enjoyed, but I am open to input and ideas.
Thanks,
Stan

Mahogany is an excellent wood for the application and is often used for custom doors, I don't know about tigerwood. The problem is that any clear finish that is exposed to the weather, especially intense sun, doesn't last for very long, at best only a year or two before it needs refinishing. If you are going to use a clear finish the best is a marine grade spar varnish preferably applied over a special epoxy primer. One brand that is commonly mentioned is Epifanes.John W.
