tonyd posted his take on “Sketchup” in another thread, and I’m promoting it to its own little thread. Here’s the quote; anyone have things to add?
Tonyd says:
Hi forestgirl,as a self-employed assistant-architect in Belgium,Europe, I use autocad and 3dstudio for more than twenty years now on a professional daily basis, until a few weeks ago I discovered Sketchup on the internet.
With the experience I have I can say Sketchup really is a revelation.
I now sketch my ideas directly on the computer thanks to the simplicity of the program and I can draw anything I want, without going through a lot of help files or tutorials. The program has very powerful features.
I can imagine that even someone without any experience in 3d-modelling, can learn Sketchup in a few days.
The pic I posted earlier was made in a few hours.
Go visit their website and their great forums at www.sketchup.com
Have fun modelling in 3d, at last!

forestgirl — you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can’t take the forest out of the girl 😉

Thanks FG,
I just went to their site and ran one of the tutorials (quicktime or Windows Media player options available).
and I'm somewhat of a software skeptic so when I say it Looks like a really cool tool - it's a really cool tool.
I've downloaded the trial - I'll see what I can come up with - with the free eight hours for the trial.
Though I'm going on vacation and the computer is not so I won't be able to post until next week.

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
Just FYI - there may be a way to fool the 8-hr timer. A pretty knowledgeable SU user I was talking to mentioned that he'd heard if you launched a 2nd instance of SU, the timer on the first one (the one you want to do your work in) would get disabled. Neither he nor I have tested this though as we were both running non-trial versions by the time we'd heard of this. Might be worth trying.
Waddaya mean it wont fit through the door?
Hi,
another example of one of my projects for the near future,
the furnishing of a round metal column in my office.
