soon to be collectable record vises?
Ok. now that I cannot find a record #53 vise in any store I have decided I must have one. Tired of shopmade wood vises that don’t seem to measure up to a Record. Any one out there with a nice one to sell can email me. Thanks knotheads.

I know that the 53 was the largest they made in recent years, but how about a brand spankin' new in the box Record Model 52 1/2 ED vise?
Call Coastal Tool, New Park Ave. Hartford, CT. When I was there a couple of weeks ago they said they had some on hand.
They have a web site:

Hope this helps anyone looking for one of these.

Having worked with Record vises and a number of others, I don't think that the Records are an especially well designed or, especially recently, well made tool. It's a shame to see a tool manufacturer scale back, but there are several other long time vise makers out there who are still making tools equal to or better than anything Record ever made, and they're still going to be around if you need parts someday.
Wilton and Jorgensen both make full size cast iron woodworker's vises that easily match the Record. The Jorgensen is especially nice, it's American made with 4" by 10" jaws and a 12 inch opening and a quick release and at $139.99 the price matches the largest Record exactly.
The Woodcraft catalog has a very complete vise selection, including the ones I've mentioned and half a dozen others. Their web address is http://www.woodcraft.com.
