I’m building a cabinet for the living room that will house a subwoofer. The subwoofer will be in the center and there wil be drawers on either side. I need to have some kind of panel that the subwoffer will be behind. I could simply make it cloth or cane or something like that, but I’m interested in something more elegant. I’d most prefer that there be a raised panel in the middle. Has anybody ever seen a material that a raised panel could be made of that would still let the sound through?

Bass from a sub-woofer is not directional, so you might be able to port the woofer out the bottom, particularly if the cabinet is raised up on legs.

Unfortunatley, it's not up on legs. It's completely enclosed.
You could stretch speaker cloth over a frame to give it the appearance of a raised-panel panel. It wouldn't look like wood, but it would still look pretty cool.
The point about acoustical transparency is that the material should have the same density as air. Sound reflects from changes in density -- like thick wooden panels. That's why speaker makers use cloth -- there just isn't very much there.
