Although I’ve put “Safe n Sound” insulation/soundproofing in the walls of my double-garage shop, I don’t know what to do with the single-car garage door. It is the standard aluminum/metal folding door with about 6 sections, a motor to raise it, and no windows. What is the best way to sound-proof it?
Thanks,

If you are talking about a standard metal garage door, soundproofing it or insulating it would be difficult. It also seems that it would be somewhat unpleasing to the eye. For my shop, I bought a single car "garage" door. Works and looks like a garage door. Fact is that it is a garage door. I wanted my shop insulated so I bought an insulated roll down garage door. I was not even thinking about soundproofing it but the effect is that I have a sound "resistant", insulated door. Have you thought about that option? I do not know the price I paid, but seems to me that it was reasonable.
I guess no one else has this sound/heat problem with garage doors. Yes, I've thought of the insulated door, but the in-place door is in perfect condition. I agree that gluing insulation sheets to the back of hte door will look ugly. I'm actually thinking of hanging two packing blankets, which I'll have to take off their hooks the few times I want to open the door. This is not a good solution as far as the physics of sound goes, but I'm not sure if it would do enough good to be worthwhile. I'm also going to put firm insulation around the door mechanism on either side becasue the drywall does not cover that 2" gap. Thanks for the reply, coolbreeze.
Cut 1" styro sheets and wedge them between the ribs at the top/bottom of each section. You can also tie them in with braided picture frame wire. It doesn't add much weight and will give both sound and heat insulation. The only reason I dont still have them on my door is that it's a fiberglass door. I didnt realize how much opaque light was coming through that door and the shop was just way too dark with the styro. That shouldn't matter for a metal door.
If you build it he will come.
