Hi to All from a new member in Danville, KY. I have been building furniture for 25+ years. Like 18th cent reproduction work and carving. Doing a small commission requiring a 36×44 2″ thick maple butcher block top. Prefer not to glue it up myself and am looking for a source. Looking forward to participating in discussions on methods, sources and tools. Wayne

Sorry I can't name the company(-ies), but I found a decent source in an unlikely place a couple of years ago. These tops are sometimes used in electronics workbenches, and I was rummaging through a catalog that sold lab equipment and benches, including 1.5" and 2" glued-up maple tops in various dimensions a while back.
One name that comes to mind, but their website doesn't give very complete information, is Techni-Tool (http://www.technitoolinc.com). They do list "Shelving, Storage, and Shop Furniture" on their website, and several brands under that topic, but they don't list what products they carry. Might be a good first shot, at least. I'd just call the 800 number and ask.

Try butcherblock.com. Boos Brother's site should come up. There's another under butcherblocks.com. Look for the Boos Brother's site. They sell a huge aray of sizes. They will also custom make any size you like if it's not standard stock size. Their prices seemed reasonable considering the amount of work involved.
Thanks for the tips. I have emailed JBoos & Tehcnitool. Will let you know results.

Might I advise against using old bowling alleys I had the opportunity to get all the stuff I wanted and mentioned it on this site and was advised not to touch it or at least not if I wanted to go through a whole lot of work getting the look I wanted.Bowling alleys are FULL of nails,BIG time work.Might I suggest a spot that I use for all kinds of stuff for the shop .The name is Global Industrial Equipment. There phone no. is 1-800-645-1232 .They have Maple tops in 1 3/4 and 2 1/4 thick also Ash tops. The prices are the best I've seen as of late. They also have tons of cool shop stuff.Good luck Rick.............................

Thanks for the tip. I will give them a call.

you might call a local cabinet shop that specializes in kitchen work... I'm sure they can point you to a supplier that is local for you.
This weekend there was a TV ad for Lumber Liquidators ( http://lumberliquidators.com/ ), and they said that they have maple butcher block countertops for $18 a lineal foot, as I recall. Their website doesn't mention this - they deal mostly in flooring products - but you could give them a call.
If they don't have a warehouse near you, they'll ship anywhere.

http://www.grizzly.com has a 36x60x1-3/4 top for $179 plus $55 S&H.
I don't know of the quality as they are importers. I will be going to the Springfield, MO location on the 9th of July and will check for you.
Is 1-3/4 thick enough?

Thanks so much. Please don't interrupt your other plans, but if you are going there for anyway I would I'd like to know as that is much less than other sources.
