Wooden button plugs used to cover recessed screws… they’re usually birch or something, they are round, and they either come flat topped (to be finished into the work), or have a mushroom cap to them. What I’m looking for is a “Craftsman Style” cap made from a dark hard wood, where the cap that shows is the classic square base / pyramid shape. These caps would simulate the look of a mortis / tenon joint.
I’m doing a porch on my house, out of cedar, that has elements of the Craftsman style / Arts and Crafts detailing to the design. There are a few places where I have large base trim boards, of 2×10, that have been attached to the porch sub-structure using stainless screws. There’s no way to hide them, and I have deliberately spaced them precisely, so that I could glue or caulk in a dark wooden cap. I thought the C-style caps would be a nice touch.
I could make some out of cedar, but I’d like to keep my finger nails (picture inverted belt sander). Any sources for these?? Thanks.

Bill, I get a lot of catalogs and have never seen square plugs for sale. I make my own. If you can make a square stick of the appropriate size, you could sand the pyramid on a stationery disc sander or even a belt sander on both ends of the stick. When you're satisfied with the symetry of the pyramid, cut them off to length with a fine handsaw or bandsaw. You get two plugs at a time and you don't get a nail trim in the process.
*Thanks Ian. Yeah, I'm not finding them anywhere.Since it's an exterior application, I'll use a dark piece of cedar, that, with being the end grain, I'm sure the Penofin will turn them dark.Thanks. - Bill
