I am interested in learning of sources for hand tools. This is not so much for hand planes (although I am interested in them too) but I am more interested in some of the less common tools like: draw knives, inshaves, froes, spoke shaves etc. I would rather have new tools but would be interested in sources for used or antique tools too. My intent is for using the tools, not for collecting them. Any sources that you can recommend would be appreciated.

I use a lot of vintage tools, planes, chisles, draw knives, hand drills. Almost everything used prior to the 1930's back to the mid 1800's. Most of these tools I pick up a Flee Markets or Garage sales, Sometimes antique malls where the dealers arn't so smart So they don't know what they have. And have picked up some real gems. Almost everything I get is functional and they get used. The market is ripe for the picking.

Hi Bruce sorry to hi-jack this thread Just wanted to say that I have used your router bits and have been pleased. Was wondering if they are made by the same people who make Whiteside?Troy
Take a look at Lee Valley also "Tools for working wood" and because I live close by my favorite "The Japan wood worker" If you want used you can always check E-bay just watch the prices often things sell for much more than you would pay for something at a traditional retailer.
Good luck

Jon Zimmers and The Best Things both have a good selection of antique tools for reasonable prices (Best Things also sells new tools). Both have superb customer service.

These two sources have some nice items. A bit pricey at times, but nice.

Thanks guys for the information, it is much appreciated. I will now begin to surf on some of those sites. I suspected that garage sales and flee markets would come up, I haven't shopped in those before but it sounds like it would be time well spent. I agree with being careful on e-bay, I guess that too is hit or miss.
Thanks again,
Will
