Hi,
I’m looking for some Teak to build the bench featured on the cover of FWW. I live in the Denver area and the price of Teak is $35-$45/bdft. Does anyone know of a reliable on-line wood supplier for Teak? Or for exotic wood in general?
I have seen messages in various forums that others have paid $14-$21/bdft. I wonder if the local dealers are quoting me a list price and sell to shops at a much discounted rate. How much of a discount do professionals get from the list price?
thanks!
Steve

That does seem a bit high. Friendly Forest Products lists Central American plantation teak at anywhere from $5.00-13.50 / bd ft, depending on length and quantity. They have a 100 bd ft minimum, and the prices don't include shipping from Miami. Shipping would probably add a few dollars / bd ft.
Old-growth Asian teak would be quite a bit higher (not to mention rather endangered).

Forest Friendly Products definitely has the best price I have seen at $13.50/bdft. Can anyone describe their experiences with them?

I have yet to purchase any wood from them (too many things on the to-do list ahead of the teak project), but I've emailed them various questions, and they've been very responsive.

That's a real nice bench your gonna build there Steve : ). Glad to see you found your way here ok and I'm sure someone will be kind enough to help you out. Cheers.
Russ.
Ouch. I just picked up 32 4/4 @ CAD 17.00 and 50 8/4 @ CAD19.00 from a distributor. I still have to calculate and order the 6/4 I need.
I also purchased Russel's plans as a show of support for the fine effort. I even got 2 thumbs up from the banker when she saw the article. She hasn't seen the bill for the teak yet.
There is a retailer in Edmonton that sells 4/4 for CAD30.00+
Surely there is a wholesaler in the Denver area you can deal with.
The people I have been dealing with have a few branches. If they have stock elsewhere and I am not in a hurry, they will bring it in on one of their regular trucks no charge. If I don't like it, no problem.

Steve,
Try http://www.cocoboloinc.com. They have plantation teak (Tectona grandis) for $6/bf for 4/4 and $7/bf for 8/4. Both 8" wide or less. Shipping from Fla will be expensive, but so will be shipping from anywhere. Hope this helps.

Teak is pricy by nature, but beware . . . there are two varieites of teak on the market: Plantation and old growth. Plantation grows much faster-hence-not as dense and seem to lack the oil content of true, mature, forest grown teak. Regardless, anyone interested in keeping some Teak for the future should buy it sooner rather than later, as Burma is under considerable international pressure and, as the only true Teak of any quality comes from their forests, look to seeing prices go up and quality go down, down, down.

Original post in 2008! I hope he made a bench by now. He could have grown his own teak to cut down costs.
