Hi all in another post some people suggested Armstrong and LL Johnson as location to get lumber in Michigan. I am located in the western Suburbs of Detroit and was wondering what all locations are good in the area. I did most of my work at my folks old place and that was a couple hours north so I am not that familiar with the local suppliers.
I have been to Fingerly (sp?) in A.A. but that is it locally for wood. (Well plywood)
So any suggestions would help. Also any good wood working supply stores around?
I have dealt with March Power Tools In Brighton/Howell and of course we have Woodcraft in Canton. Their used to be a couple places on Woodward north of say 14mile on the east side but I have not been their in a long time.
For those of you farther north, their is a place called Deforest Millwork in Houghton Lake not to far off the expressway. He is a millwork company that does custom wood work of all sorts but he has a good supply of the standard woods (Cherry, Clear pine, oak, mahogany etc..) and his prices are hard to beet. I went up and picked up the wood for the Kitchen and the trim for the house from him as he was enough cheaper that I saved a ton and it justified the drive. (about 600 bd ft total of Clear Pine, Cherry and Mahogany) He will either let you sort for your own boards or he will help you pick, them.
Also in that area you have the Tool Haus in Gladwin they have a good supply of power tools ranging from the Hobby level to the big stuff that the pros and production shops use.
Anyway I figured it would be nice if we compared notes on places around here. For instance anyone know anyplace in the area to pick up old tools?
Doug Meyer
PS I was born and raised around here but I just never did much wood working locally until just now)

Public Lumber at I-75 & 7 Mile Rd. is usually where I end up if Armstrong doesn't have what I'm looking for.
If you build it he will come.
Armstrong is really quite close to you near the intersection of US 23 and M-59. Near Ann Arbor there is B and B Hardwoods on Whitmore Lake Road. Armstrong has one of the best selections I have seen. Woodcraft in Canton has a wide selection in limited quantities. Worth exploring depending on your needs.
