There are a bunch of people who sell seat blanks online. It might be easier to go that route.
Don't be afraid of gluing up a chair seat, though I wouldn't use more than two pieces. Just watch the grain direction.
How far are you from Oxford (Hearne's Hardwoods) or Quarryville (Groff & Groff)? Both have excellent web sites with price lists. Not sure if they ship. I buy a lot of wood fro both of them. Both very pleasant to work with.
The best source for seasoned air dried lumber and the best prices by far is from the widows of deceased woodworkers.
Do you have borers up there? If you're air drying you need to treat the lumber with BoraCare or TimBor.
If my wood doesn’t have tunnels in it and dust piling up around it could I assume there’s no borers?
If it satisfies that "if" for a year or two, yes. I.e., it hasn't been recently infected with the beetle larvae. Generally, however, air-dried lumber, by the time it is dry, will either show evidence of infection (holes and dust) or not be infected.
I have made 8 Windsor chairs and dont believe any of my blanks were air dried or one piece. Over the years all my air dried material I dried myself. Most dealers sell kiln dried as it is more consistent .However all my sack back curves and spindles were split from green lumber. My shop is in Philadelphia so call me if you are in town at 215 776 4578.I have some cherry formed stool blanks somewhat like windsor seats. Also a drill jig that eases hand hollowing the seats
