Hi to all,
I’m making a large shop cabinet that will set on my secondary bench. The doors panels are Hickory and the rails and stiles are Chestnut. The doors are 32″ x 16″ with 3/4″ thick x 1-3/4″ tall rail and stiles. I have routed out the stiles and rail for the 5/16 hickory panels. My questions is how much space should I allow for movement between the panel inside the rails/stiles? Should I put small spacers between panel and stiles/rails? Thanks Chuck in Knoxville, TN

Are the panels raised solid wood or veneer ? 1 3/4" stiles and rails imo are on the small end of the spectrum for cabinet doors . Depending on what type of hinges you will use , euro hinge cup holes will be rather close to the edge of the slot the panel is in .
If the lumber is dry and stable usually an 1/8" shy in width and also in height will be adequate .On a veneer panel there is little need to center the panel in the frame , but a raised panel should be centered to keep an even reveal around the panel detail on the front of the door .
They make some little spacers called space balls that stay between the panel edge and the frame to keep the panel centered . I have never used them , rather I mark some light corner marks on the back of the panel and shoot a few 5/8" pins between the panel and the frame to help keep the panel centered and at the same time eliminate and panel rattle .
good luck dusty
Thanks Dusty,
I've decided to use piano hinges, I will try to run down the space balls. thanks Chuck
In lieu of store-bought spacers, I often run a bead of silicone caulk on some wax paper. (Size the bead according to your needs.) Once it's dry, peel it off the paper, cut into into short lenghts and fit them into the grove at assembly time.

You do not need spacers, pin the vertical grain in the top and bottom with a brad from the back, in the center of the rails
