I cut up part of the one round from the downed maple tree tonight. Just practicing and trying to get a feel for how to cut it. Pic below shows the gist of the wood, though the color balance on my old camera is pretty bad.
?? – Is there a rule of thumb for type of cutting to do on this stuff? It seems to present a more striking appearance when plain-sawn. Does that vary from one log to another, or is it preferable to plain-saw spalted wood? The only other spalted maple lumber I’ve seen up close, added in with a router I bought, was also plain-sawn and has stayed nice and flat.
This is going to be great fun. The wood is still quite firm, the spalting distinct. The piece I cut tonight was the least wonderful from the round. The rest of it is big enough, I’m going to wait for the bandsaw riser kit to arrive before cutting it. The tree is still nested in the ivy, just waiting.

FG,
Better than Christmas! I know nothing about cutting spalted maple but I can't wait to see what you do with it - enjoy!

OK, Wayne, you have to promise to stay around for another year! It should be dry by then. There'll be no excuse for me not having a project picked out for it, huh?! forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
That's way cool....ya may wanna get the rest out of the forest b4 it goes too far..
I once fell in love with a HUGE cherry burl About 36" sphere witha 4" trunk running right through it..paid 60.00$ for it, my buddy and I got it up on the woodmizer after MONTHS of me Hemmin, an hawin, just how I wanted to slice it up. When I finally got the nerve to cut it..
IT WAS MOSTLY HOLLOW....aaarrgghhh. THat's why some wood is sold by weight, not volume..lol. I was younger then.
Yep, I'm pretty eager to get the big log cut up. The pieces in the picture came from a 14"-or-so-long round that was laying with the log. I'm assuming, hopefully correctly, that it spalted faster than the big long log that's still laying there. It's been down for 2 or 3 years. Was going to drag it up to the house tomorrow, but have an appliance delivery to deal with, so it'll have to wait. The downside of being a merchant -- only 1 day off a week to do the dirty work!forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
