OK folks, here’s the latest. Every morning, I’ve been on here deleting several pages of spam, reporting it to the system which develops profiles of potential spam (in order to train the system to identify this stuff) and have been furiously blocking accounts (about 600 were blocked yesterday) of spammers. It’s a large job to say the least but I’m starting to see daylight.
The one questions which remains is why the Knots forum–as opposed to Fine Homebuilding’s Breaktime forum–gets attacked so often. Both forums are on the same platform, with the same tools, yet we get hit with these tsunamis of odd kitchen-related spam.
Now that we’ve blocked the vast majority of the offending accounts, we should start to see a difference. That said, I’ll still be checking in every morning and every evening, to keep this play in shape. Meanwhile, our interactive department is looking into a better spam filter for obvious reasons.
I cannot thank folks enough for dealing with this complete nonsense. I’m still marveling at the fact that I haven’t received a single “ill-intentioned” email. I could certainly understand why some folks might want to paint a target on my back.
Anyhow, I will continue to crack the whip over the interactive department until this situation is finally resolved and–as I said before–I’ll be here every morning and every evening.
Regards,
-Ed

Thanks for the good job, Ed. Spam over at Breaktime may be being handled by Calvin. Apparently, these same spammers are hitting many other forums.
