I’ve gotten three coats of spar varnish on a picnic table that for the most part looks real good. Of course theres always something, right? In 3 or 4 areas about 4 to 5 inches each there are spots where it looks sort of crystalized and wrinkly. This morning I sanded the spots with 150, tacked it with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits and then touched it up with some more varnish. Will this take of the problem and can someone tell me what this problem is?

froemallet,
I too have that occur on me.. usually when I put a coat on too soon., Sad to say repairs always seem to fail first.
Was this a refinishing job? If so, how did you remove the prior finish and what was it? It sounds like some sort of local contamination.
Howie:
this was the same picnic table you responded to the other day. I followed your suggestions-sanded down with 150, dusted and then wiped down with mineral spirits dampened cloth-then reapplied spar varnish. I've let the coats dry overnight and the temperature has been low to mid eighties.
